@Moulin Thanks for dropping by, Moulin. I’m still new here so there are still many things to discover for sure. Are you in Mumbai?
@Kalyan I’m innocent in this case lah. Some of my friends told me that they don’t call it Mumbai, but Bombay instead. I don’t know the difference.
Great write up (and pictures) about my city, glad you liked it so much. Hope you have a great time out here and take some great pictures too, the Fort area is worth walking around with your camera clicking away to glory!!!
My cousin recommended this blog and she was totally right keep up the fantastic work!
Well. Bombay doesn’t exist at all. Do update your records. I know that there are people in India who think Bombay to be more familiar, but in future it’s going to be just Mumbai. Pity BBC still shows “Bombay” while they telecast the weather report.
Read below story about Aamachi Mumbai – “OUR MUMBAI”.
Portuguese people were the first to land in Mumbai and they assumed that they own the territory. Brits also came after some time and wanted the city into their possession because of the strategic location. But they couldn’t win the city from Portuguese in any case.
Meanwhile, the Portuguese princess Infanta Breganza, got married with British prince. Then the city was given as gift (dowry) to Brits.
The reply to “Ola” in Portuguese in “Bom dia”.
Brits got that wrong…!! Since Mumbai has a bay they made it Bombay. Here I explain why the name Bombay was made, But I haven’t explained why “MUMBAI”.
I will do that right away.
The Mumbai used to belong to tribal people whose primary occupation was fishing. Their tribal goddess was MUMBA. Thus, Mumbai even today has a temple of MUMBADEVI. DEVI means goddess in Marathi, Hindi, Sanskrit and probably most of the indo-aryan languages.
PS: Good blog. Nice photography. Nice architecture of the blog too….!!
